FAQ Schema in 2026: Is It Still Worth Using?

FAQ schema used to be one of the easiest ways to take up more space in Google results. Add some markup, get expandable questions under your listing, and watch your click-through rate rise. Then Google changed the rules. If you are wondering whether FAQ schema is still worth adding, this guide gives a clear answer: what changed, what FAQ markup can and cannot do today, when it still makes sense and how to add it correctly on a WordPress site.
What is FAQ schema?
FAQ schema is structured data, usually written as JSON-LD, that labels a page’s questions and answers so machines can read them. It uses the FAQPage type from Schema.org, with each question as a Question and each answer as an Answer inside acceptedAnswer. The markup must match FAQ content that visitors can actually see on the page.

"@context": "https://schema.org",
"@type": "FAQPage",
"mainEntity": [{
"@type": "Question",
"name": "How long does SEO take?",
"acceptedAnswer": {
"@type": "Answer",
"text": "Most sites see early signals within a few months."
}
}]
}
What changed with FAQ rich results
In August 2023, Google announced that FAQ rich results would be shown only for well-known, authoritative government and health websites. For nearly every other site, the expandable FAQ appearance in Google Search stopped. Google also reduced the visibility of how-to rich results around the same time. Google’s documentation describes FAQ markup as still valid, but most sites will not get the visual feature from it.
That means two old arguments for FAQ schema are gone for most businesses: taking up more result space and boosting click-through rate with expandable answers.
Is FAQ schema still worth using in 2026?
The honest answer: it depends on what you expect from it.
| Reason to add FAQ schema | Still true? | Comment |
|---|---|---|
| Get FAQ rich results in Google | Mostly no | Limited to authoritative government and health sites |
| Improve rankings directly | No evidence | Structured data is not a ranking factor on its own |
| Help machines understand your Q&A content | Plausible | Clean markup is unambiguous, but Google does not require it to understand text |
| Support AI answers and other search tools | Unproven | No platform has committed to using it, so treat it as a possible small benefit |
| Keep clean, valid, consistent markup | Yes | Low cost when your plugin outputs it automatically |
Our recommendation: do not spend significant time or money on FAQ schema, but do not worry about removing it if it is already there and valid. The real value is in the FAQ content, not the markup.
Why FAQ content still matters
Questions and answers remain one of the best formats for modern search, even without a rich result.
- People search in questions, and AI assistants are built around them.
- A short, direct answer under a question heading is easy for search engines and AI systems to extract and quote.
- FAQ sections capture long-tail variations and reduce the need for separate thin pages.
- They answer objections right where a buyer is deciding, which helps conversions.
This is the core of answer engine optimization. Our AEO guide explains how to write answers that get used.
How to write a useful FAQ section
- Use real questions. Pull them from sales calls, support emails, “People also ask” and Search Console queries.
- Answer first. Start with a direct answer in one or two sentences, then add a short explanation if needed.
- Be specific. Include ranges, steps, limits and conditions, not marketing slogans.
- Keep it relevant. Questions should relate to the page’s topic, not be stuffed with unrelated keywords.
- Do not duplicate. Do not repeat the same FAQ block across many pages. Each page should have questions that fit it.
- Keep it a sensible length. Five to eight strong questions beat twenty weak ones.
Rules for using FAQ schema correctly
- The marked-up questions and answers must be visible on the page to users. Hidden FAQ markup violates guidelines.
- Do not use FAQPage for forums or for user-submitted questions with multiple answers. That is a different type (QAPage).
- Do not use it for advertising. Answers should not be promotional copy.
- Keep the markup in sync with the page. If you change an answer, the schema must change too.
- Validate the markup with the Schema Markup Validator and Google’s Rich Results Test, and watch Search Console for errors.
How to add FAQ schema in WordPress
Option 1: Rank Math or another SEO plugin
Rank Math includes an FAQ block for the block editor that outputs both the visible questions and the matching schema. Other SEO plugins offer similar blocks. This is the simplest option for most sites.
Option 2: Generate it from your page template
If you use a custom theme or page builder, your developer can generate the schema from the same data that renders the accordion, so the markup always matches the visible text. That is how the landing pages on this site work, for example our AI SEO services page.
Option 3: Hand-written JSON-LD
You can paste JSON-LD into a header or custom HTML block. This works, but it is easy to let it drift out of date. Use it only for small sites or one-off pages.
For the wider picture of which types matter and how to test them, see our schema markup guide.
Which schema types are worth more attention?
If you want structured data that helps clarity and eligibility for features that still exist, prioritize these:
- Organization and WebSite for brand and site identity.
- Article or BlogPosting with author and dates for editorial content.
- BreadcrumbList for site structure.
- LocalBusiness for businesses with a physical location.
- Product and Review markup for ecommerce, where the guidelines are met.
- Service for service pages, to describe what you offer.
Frequently asked questions
Does FAQ schema still work in Google?
The markup is still valid, but Google generally shows FAQ rich results only for well-known government and health sites, so most businesses will not see the visual feature.
Will removing FAQ schema hurt my rankings?
There is no evidence that it will. Structured data is not a direct ranking factor. If you keep the visible FAQ content, you keep the benefit.
Does FAQ schema help with AI answers?
No AI search platform has confirmed that it uses FAQ schema. Clear question-and-answer content helps either way, and the markup may offer a small additional signal.
Can I use FAQ schema on every page?
Only where the page has a genuine FAQ section that users can see. Repeating the same questions everywhere is not recommended.
What is the difference between FAQPage and QAPage?
FAQPage is for a single, publisher-written answer to each question. QAPage is for pages where users can submit multiple answers, such as forums.
