Short answer: to do answer engine optimization on WordPress, structure each important page around one question, put a direct answer at the top, add a real FAQ section, use clean heading structure, output accurate schema with an SEO plugin, keep the site fast and crawlable, and show who wrote the content. You do not need a special AEO plugin. This guide walks through each step inside WordPress, with settings to check and mistakes to avoid.

What AEO means on a WordPress site

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of making your content easy for search features and AI assistants to extract and quote as an answer. WordPress is a good platform for it, because you control headings, content blocks, schema and speed. Our AEO guide explains the concept. This article focuses on how to implement it in WordPress itself.

Step 1: Pick the question each page answers

Every page should have one main question or job. List your services and products and write the questions customers ask about each one. Use sales emails, support tickets, Search Console queries and the “People also ask” box. Map each question to one page so you do not create competing duplicates. Our keyword research guide shows how to do this without cannibalization.

Step 2: Put the answer first

Open the page, or each section, with a plain answer in one or two sentences. Then explain.

  • Write the question as a heading (H2 or H3) when it fits naturally.
  • Answer in the first sentence under it.
  • Follow with steps, examples, prices or conditions.

In the block editor, use a Paragraph block directly under the heading for the short answer, then lists and tables below it. Avoid burying the answer after a long introduction.

Step 3: Use a clean heading structure

  • One H1 per page, normally the page title. Check that your theme does not output a second H1.
  • H2 for main sections and H3 for sub-points, in order, without skipping levels.
  • Descriptive headings, not vague ones like “More info”.

You can check your outline with the List View in the block editor or by viewing the headings in any SEO browser extension.

Step 4: Add a real FAQ section

A short FAQ near the end of each key page captures related questions and long-tail searches. Use five to eight real questions and answer each in a few sentences. In WordPress you can:

  • Use the FAQ block from your SEO plugin, which outputs the visible questions and matching schema.
  • Use an accordion block or a theme feature, then make sure the schema matches the visible text.

Be realistic about schema benefits. Google limited FAQ rich results in 2023, as explained in our article on whether FAQ schema is still worth using. The content is valuable even without the rich result.

Step 5: Use lists and tables where they fit

Comparisons, steps and specifications are easier to quote as lists and tables. Use the List and Table blocks. Keep tables simple, with a header row, and make sure they scroll properly on mobile. Do not use a table just for layout.

Step 6: Set up schema correctly

Use one SEO plugin, not two. In Rank Math or Yoast:

  1. Fill in site identity: name, logo and social profiles, so Organization markup is complete.
  2. Set the default schema for posts to Article or BlogPosting and for service pages to Service or WebPage.
  3. Add LocalBusiness details if you serve a location.
  4. Enable breadcrumbs.
  5. Test pages in the Rich Results Test and Schema Markup Validator.

Step 7: Make the site crawlable

  • Confirm WordPress search visibility is not discouraging search engines (Settings, Reading).
  • Review your robots.txt and any security or CDN rules that block bots. See allowing or blocking AI crawlers.
  • Submit your sitemap in Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools.
  • Make sure important content is in the page HTML and not loaded only after user actions.

Step 8: Keep the site fast

Speed supports crawling and user experience. Use a caching plugin or host-level caching, optimize images, reduce unused plugins and avoid heavy page builders on key pages where you can. Our guide to Core Web Vitals on WordPress has the details.

Step 9: Show real authorship and trust

  • Add author bios and use real names on posts.
  • Create a clear About page and contact page.
  • Add dates and update pages when facts change.
  • Link to sources for facts you state.

Use descriptive internal links between related pages. Link from guides to the matching service pages, and from service pages to supporting guides. For example, our AEO services page links to the guides that explain each part of the work.

Do you need an AEO plugin?

Not usually. Some plugins claim to automate AEO, but most of the work is editorial and structural: choosing questions, writing clear answers and keeping facts accurate. A good SEO plugin plus a clean theme is enough for most sites. Be careful with tools that auto-generate large amounts of AI text. Thin, unchecked content rarely earns citations.

Frequently asked questions

Is AEO different from SEO on WordPress?

It builds on SEO. The foundation is the same, and AEO adds answer-first writing, FAQ sections and clear structure.

Does Rank Math or Yoast help with AEO?

Both help by managing titles, schema and sitemaps. They do not write good answers for you.

Do I have to rewrite all my pages?

No. Start with your most important service pages and the posts that already get impressions in Search Console.

Will AEO get me into Google AI Overviews?

It improves your chances but cannot guarantee inclusion. Read our guide on how to rank in Google AI Overviews.

How long does AEO take to work?

Page changes can be recrawled within weeks, but visible results usually take longer. See how long SEO takes.
