How to Add LocalBusiness Schema in WordPress (With Example)

Short answer: to add LocalBusiness schema in WordPress, enable the local SEO or schema feature of your SEO plugin, fill in your business name, address, phone number, opening hours and profile links, choose the most specific business type, then test the page in the Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator. You can also paste JSON-LD by hand. Either way, the markup must match what is visible on the page. This guide shows both methods with a copy-ready example.

What LocalBusiness schema is

LocalBusiness is a Schema.org type that describes a business with a physical location or a defined service area: its name, address, phone number, hours, website and more. It has many subtypes, such as Dentist, Plumber, Restaurant, AutoRepair, LegalService and ProfessionalService. Using the most specific subtype that fits your business is better than the generic parent.

Google can use this data to understand your business and, together with your Google Business Profile, to show accurate details. It does not replace a Business Profile, and it does not guarantee higher map rankings. Think of it as clear, machine-readable support for the facts you already publish. For wider background, read our JSON-LD schema guide and our local SEO guide.

Which properties to include

Property What to enter Priority
name Your exact business name, matching your Business Profile Required
address Full postal address, as a PostalAddress Required if you have a location
telephone A phone number in international format Strongly recommended
url Your website home page Strongly recommended
openingHoursSpecification Days and times you are open Recommended
geo Latitude and longitude Recommended
image or logo A real photo or your logo Recommended
priceRange A simple range such as $$ Optional
areaServed Cities or regions you serve Recommended for service-area businesses
sameAs Links to official social and directory profiles Recommended

Do not add properties you cannot support. Fake review counts and invented ratings can lead to penalties.

Example LocalBusiness JSON-LD

Replace the example values with your real details:

<script type="application/ld+json">
{
  "@context": "https://schema.org",
  "@type": "ProfessionalService",
  "name": "Example Studio",
  "url": "https://example.com/",
  "telephone": "+1-555-010-0000",
  "image": "https://example.com/images/storefront.jpg",
  "priceRange": "$$",
  "address": {
    "@type": "PostalAddress",
    "streetAddress": "123 Main Street",
    "addressLocality": "Austin",
    "addressRegion": "TX",
    "postalCode": "78701",
    "addressCountry": "US"
  },
  "openingHoursSpecification": [{
    "@type": "OpeningHoursSpecification",
    "dayOfWeek": ["Monday","Tuesday","Wednesday","Thursday","Friday"],
    "opens": "09:00",
    "closes": "17:00"
  }],
  "sameAs": [
    "https://www.linkedin.com/company/example",
    "https://www.facebook.com/example"
  ]
}
</script>

Method 1: Add it with Rank Math

  1. In Rank Math, open Titles and Meta, then Local SEO, and enter your business name, type, address, phone, hours and logo.
  2. Set the business type to the most specific option available.
  3. Make sure the same details appear on your Contact page and in your footer.
  4. Rank Math then outputs the LocalBusiness data on your site. Check the home page and contact page.

Yoast offers similar features through its local SEO add-on. If you are still choosing between them, see Rank Math vs Yoast.

Method 2: Add custom JSON-LD

If you need full control, add the JSON-LD from a small custom plugin or a code snippet tool that prints it in the page head on the right page, usually the home page or Contact page. Avoid editing theme files directly, because theme updates can remove your changes. Make sure a plugin is not already outputting a second LocalBusiness block. Duplicates create conflicts.

Multiple locations

  • Give each location its own page with its own address, phone number and hours.
  • Put the LocalBusiness markup for that location on that page only.
  • Keep your main Organization markup on the home page and connect locations to it.

Service-area businesses

If you travel to customers and do not serve people at your address, use areaServed to list the cities or regions you serve. Match what you set in Google Business Profile, including whether you display your address. Do not publish a home address if you hide it elsewhere.

How to test your markup

  1. Run the page through Google’s Rich Results Test and the Schema Markup Validator.
  2. Check that every value matches the visible page.
  3. View the page source and confirm there is one LocalBusiness block, not several.
  4. After publishing, watch Search Console for structured data errors and warnings.

Common mistakes

  • Using the generic LocalBusiness type when a precise subtype exists.
  • Name, address or phone number that differ from the Business Profile and directories.
  • Opening hours that are out of date.
  • Marking up reviews that are not shown on the page, or invented ratings.
  • Two plugins outputting separate, conflicting schema.

Frequently asked questions

Does LocalBusiness schema improve map rankings?

Not directly. Google Business Profile, reviews, proximity and relevance matter more. Schema supports clarity and consistency.

Which pages need LocalBusiness schema?

The home page, the Contact page and each location page. You do not need it on every blog post.

Can I use LocalBusiness schema without a physical address?

Yes, if you serve an area. Use areaServed and follow your Business Profile settings for address display.

Do I need a plugin?

No, but an SEO plugin makes it easier to keep the markup in sync with your settings.

How long until Google shows my details?

Google needs to recrawl the page. Markup is not a display guarantee, and results vary.
