Local SEO Guide: How to Rank in Google Maps and the Local Pack

When someone searches for a plumber, a dentist or a storage unit near them, Google often shows a map with three businesses above the regular results. That area, known as the local pack, captures a large share of the clicks and calls for local searches. Getting into it is a different job from ranking a normal web page. This guide explains how local rankings work and the steps that move a small business up.

How local rankings are decided

Google has said that local results are based mainly on three factors: relevance, distance and prominence.

  • Relevance is how well your listing matches what the person searched for. Complete, accurate profile information helps here.
  • Distance is how far your business is from the searcher or from the location named in the search. You cannot change where you are, but you can make sure your location data is correct.
  • Prominence is how well known and trusted your business appears to be. Reviews, links, mentions and general web presence all feed into it.

Distance is the one factor outside your control, so the work concentrates on relevance and prominence.

Set up and maintain your Google Business Profile

Your Google Business Profile is the single most important local asset. Claim it, verify it, and then treat it as a living page rather than a one-time form.

Choose categories carefully

Your primary category carries the most weight. Pick the one that describes your core business as precisely as possible, then add secondary categories for other services you genuinely offer. Looking at which categories your best-ranking competitors use is a reliable way to check your choice.

Fill in every relevant field

Add accurate opening hours, including special hours for holidays. List your services, write a clear business description in plain language, add your website and appointment link, and use attributes that apply to you. Incomplete profiles give Google less to match against searches.

Add real photos regularly

Upload photos of your premises, your team, your work and your products. Original photos taken by your own staff are more convincing than stock images. Adding new ones over time signals that the business is active.

Use posts and updates sparingly but consistently

Offers, news and event updates give searchers fresh information. They are not a magic ranking lever, but they help the profile convert visitors who find it.

Follow the guidelines

Use your real business name, with no keywords added. Adding keywords to the name or listing a virtual office as a location can lead to suspension. If you travel to customers and do not have a public storefront, set up a service area rather than showing an address.

Keep your business details consistent

Name, address and phone number, often shortened to NAP, should be identical wherever they appear: your website, your Business Profile, social profiles and directories. Inconsistent details confuse both customers and search systems. Start with the major data sources and the directories that matter in your industry and region, and correct anything that is out of date. Quality matters more than quantity, so a handful of accurate listings beats hundreds of automatically generated ones.

Build location pages that deserve to rank

Your website supports your map ranking and also captures the regular results beneath it. If you serve several towns or have several branches, give each one its own page, but write each page for real.

  • Describe the services you provide in that area and the specific problems customers there tend to have.
  • Include the local address or service area, local phone number and a map embed where appropriate.
  • Add genuine local proof such as reviews, project photos and named neighborhoods you have worked in.
  • Do not clone one page and swap the town name. Near-identical pages are low value and can be treated as doorway pages.

Each page should also be easy to reach through internal links and fit into your broader plan, which we describe in our guide to SEO strategy for small businesses.

Earn reviews the right way

Reviews influence both rankings and the decision to call you. Ask every satisfied customer, ideally soon after the job is done, and make it easy by sending a direct link to your review form. Reply to every review, thanking people for positive ones and answering negative ones calmly and specifically. Do not offer rewards for reviews, do not selectively ask only happy customers through a gate, and never write or buy fake reviews. These practices break platform rules and erode trust when customers notice.

Add local structured data

LocalBusiness markup on your website tells search engines your business type, address, phone number, opening hours and service area in a machine-readable form. It will not replace a strong Business Profile, but it reinforces it and helps other systems, including AI assistants, interpret who you are and where you operate. We walk through the implementation in our JSON-LD schema markup guide.

Make the site technically sound

Local pages still depend on a healthy website. Fast mobile loading matters because most local searches happen on phones, and a clear tap-to-call button can be the difference between a lead and a bounce. Check the basics covered in our technical SEO checklist so that location pages are crawlable and indexable.

Prominence grows when real organizations mention you. Sponsor a local team, join the chamber of commerce, partner with complementary businesses, contribute to a local news story or host an event. Links earned this way tend to be relevant and durable, and they also bring genuine customers.

Measure the right things

Business Profile insights show how many people searched for you, called, requested directions or visited your website. Compare those figures month to month. In Search Console, filter queries that include your town or service names. Add call tracking or tagged links on your profile so you can attribute leads. A rank tracker that checks results from specific points on a map grid can show how visibility changes across your service area, though results from different tools will not match exactly.

A short local SEO checklist

  1. Claim and verify your Business Profile and choose the right primary category.
  2. Complete every field, add services, and upload original photos.
  3. Make your name, address and phone number consistent across the web.
  4. Create a unique, helpful page for each location or service area.
  5. Request reviews steadily and respond to all of them.
  6. Add LocalBusiness structured data to the website.
  7. Earn local links and mentions through real community involvement.
  8. Review profile insights and search data every month.

Storefront or service-area business: what changes

Local SEO works differently depending on how you serve customers.

  • Storefront businesses such as shops, clinics and restaurants show a public address. Their physical location carries weight, so accuracy of the address, hours and photos of the premises matters a great deal.
  • Service-area businesses such as plumbers, cleaners and electricians travel to customers. Google allows you to hide the address and define the areas you serve. Choose realistic areas, since listing every town in a region does not help and can look spammy.
  • Hybrid businesses that see customers on site and also travel can show an address and list a service area. Make sure both are accurate.

In every case, the website should reflect reality. A service-area business should explain clearly where it works, and a storefront business should make directions, parking and opening hours obvious.

Review replies that build trust

Replies are public, so people read them as evidence of how you treat customers. Keep them specific and calm. These outlines can be adapted to your own voice.

For a positive review

Thank the customer by name, mention something specific about the job, and invite them back. Avoid pasting the same reply under every review, because it reads as automated.

For a negative review

Acknowledge the problem without arguing, apologise where it is warranted, state what you will do or have done, and offer an offline way to continue the conversation. Never share private customer details in a public reply. A thoughtful response to a bad review often impresses readers more than a page of perfect ratings.

For a suspected fake review

Flag it through the platform, keep a calm public reply that says you cannot find a record of the job, and avoid accusations. Report patterns of fake reviews through Google’s tools instead of arguing in public.

How AI assistants use local information

When people ask an assistant for a recommendation near them, the answer is often assembled from map data, review content and web pages. Accurate profile details, descriptive reviews and clear location and service pages all help. Structured data supports this by stating your details unambiguously, and our overview of generative engine optimization explains how brand signals feed those answers.

Frequently asked questions

How long does it take to rank in the local pack?

It depends on competition and how complete your profile and website already are. Small improvements to categories, photos and reviews can show results within weeks in less competitive areas, while crowded markets take longer.

Can I rank in a city where I have no office?

It is difficult for the map results, which weigh distance heavily. You can still compete in the regular results with strong location or service pages if you genuinely serve that area.

Do I need a website for local SEO?

You can appear in the map results with only a Business Profile, but a good website supports rankings, converts visitors and gives you control over your message. Most businesses benefit from having both.

Should I buy citations or reviews in bulk?

No. Bulk citations add little value, and bought reviews break platform rules and can lead to removal or suspension. Steady, genuine reviews and accurate listings are safer and more effective.

Common local SEO mistakes

The usual problems are keyword-stuffed business names, duplicate listings for the same location, an outdated phone number on an old directory, one generic page for all towns and neglected reviews. They are all fixable and worth checking first before investing in anything more advanced.
