How to Optimize Your Website for Claude AI Search

Short answer: to get your website cited by Claude, make sure Claude’s search can find and read your pages, then publish clear, factual, well-structured content that answers a specific question better than the alternatives. Claude uses web search for current questions, and according to Anthropic’s published subprocessor list one of its search providers is Brave Search. Anthropic also runs its own crawlers for different purposes. This guide explains what is confirmed, what is not, and the steps that improve your chances.
How Claude finds web sources
Claude answers many questions from its training. For current or specific questions it can use web search, then write an answer and link to the sources it used. Two things follow from that: your content can influence Claude’s answers through the web search route, and the route depends on search indexes that Claude draws on.
Anthropic does not publish a full explanation of how it ranks and selects sources. What has been reported publicly, including by independent researchers who tested Claude’s search behavior, is that Brave Search is a backend for Claude’s web search, and Anthropic’s own subprocessor list names Brave among its web search providers. Providers can change, so treat this as the current picture and not a permanent fact.
Anthropic’s crawlers
| User agent | Purpose |
|---|---|
| ClaudeBot | Collects content that may be used for model training |
| Claude-SearchBot | Helps improve the quality of search results shown to Claude users |
| Claude-User | Fetches a page when a user asks Claude to look at it |
Anthropic documents these on its support pages, and the details can change, so check the latest version before making robots.txt decisions. Allowing the search and user crawlers supports visibility. Blocking ClaudeBot is a separate training decision. Copy-ready robots.txt examples are in our guide to allowing or blocking AI crawlers on WordPress.
Step 1: Make your site indexable beyond Google
If Claude’s search relies partly on an independent index such as Brave’s, being indexed in Google alone is not enough. Check these basics:
- Search for your brand and your key page titles in Brave Search and see whether they appear.
- Keep pages crawlable. Reports on Brave’s crawling suggest that pages blocked to Googlebot may not be crawled either, so avoid accidental blocks.
- Keep a clean XML sitemap and strong internal links so every important page is easy to discover.
- Make sure content is in the page HTML and not hidden behind scripts or logins.
Step 2: Allow the right crawlers
Check robots.txt, your CDN, firewall and security plugins for rules that block Anthropic’s user agents. Many sites block unknown bots by default. Use the steps in how to check if AI bots are crawling your website to confirm that requests return a normal 200 response.
Step 3: Answer specific questions directly
Claude tends to produce careful, source-based answers. Pages that state a direct answer clearly and support it with specifics are easier to use.
- Put the question in a heading and the answer in the first sentences below it.
- Be precise: define terms, give numbers with context and dates, and state limits.
- Use lists and tables for steps and comparisons.
- Admit uncertainty where it exists. Honest pages are safer to cite than overconfident ones.
These habits are the core of answer engine optimization.
Step 4: Show evidence and expertise
- Link to primary sources for facts you state.
- Add original material: your own data, tests, process notes or screenshots.
- Show authors with real names and relevant experience.
- Keep pages up to date, and update dates only when the content actually changed.
Step 5: Keep your brand facts consistent
Whatever route an assistant uses, it needs to be sure who you are and what you do. Use the same business name, description, location and service list across your website, social profiles and directories. Add Organization and Service schema where it matches visible content. Our article on getting mentioned in ChatGPT covers the same brand signals, which work across assistants.
Step 6: Earn mentions elsewhere
Independent coverage, directory listings, reviews and expert contributions give search systems more evidence that you are real and relevant. Aim for quality over quantity. This is part of what we call generative engine optimization.
Step 7: Test whether Claude cites you
- Make a list of 10 to 20 customer questions.
- Ask Claude each one with web search enabled, and note which sources are linked.
- Record whether your domain, your brand or competitors appear.
- Repeat monthly and look for trends, not single answers.
Use the full method in how to track brand visibility in AI search.
What not to do
- Do not buy “guaranteed Claude citations”. No one controls them.
- Do not hide instructions for AI in your pages.
- Do not flood your site with thin AI-written pages.
- Do not invent statistics or testimonials.
Frequently asked questions
Does Claude use Google?
Anthropic has not described Google as its search provider. Its published subprocessor list names Brave Search, and independent tests have matched Brave-like behavior. Providers can change over time.
Do I need to submit my site to Claude?
There is no submission form for Claude citations. You make your site crawlable and indexable, and you publish useful pages.
Should I block ClaudeBot?
That is a content-use decision. Blocking ClaudeBot addresses training collection, while search and user crawlers are separate. Review Anthropic’s documentation for the current purpose of each.
Is optimizing for Claude different from ChatGPT?
The fundamentals are the same: access, clear answers, evidence and trusted brand signals. The search backends and crawlers differ, so check access for each.
How long will it take?
Search-based changes can appear within weeks once pages are indexed. Nothing is guaranteed, and results vary by topic and competition.
